If you run a store on Magento, the idea of moving to Shopify has probably crossed your desk more than once. It usually arrives attached to something: a hosting invoice, a quote for the next upgrade, or a developer telling you a small change will take three weeks.

A Magento to Shopify migration is not a small job, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. But for plenty of retailers it is the right call. Here is the honest version: why people leave, what actually carries across, what you have to protect, and how long it really takes.

Why retailers leave Magento

Magento is capable software. That is not the problem. The problem is what it costs you to keep it running well.

Hosting and upgrades. Magento needs real servers and someone who knows how to tune them. You pay for the hosting, the patching, and the person who keeps it upright. Every major version brings an upgrade project, and those projects have a habit of running longer and costing more than the quote.

Developer dependency. On Magento, almost nothing changes without a developer. Move a button, add a promotion, tweak the checkout copy: that is a ticket, a quote and a wait. Your marketing team ends up unable to act on its own ideas.

Complexity. The flexibility that sold you Magento is the same thing that makes it heavy. More moving parts means more that can break, and more to test every time you touch it.

Security patching. Magento patches arrive regularly, and skipping them is not an option for a store taking card details. If nobody is on top of that, you are one missed patch away from a bad morning.

Shopify takes most of that off your plate. Hosting, patching, PCI compliance and platform upgrades are Shopify’s problem, not yours. You trade some deep control for a lot less operational drag. For most retailers that is a trade worth making. If your store genuinely needs logic Shopify cannot express, it is better to know that before you start, and we will tell you plainly if we think you are one of the few.

What maps across cleanly

The good news is that most of your Magento setup has a natural home in Shopify.

  • Configurable products and attribute sets become Shopify products with options and variants. A shirt in three colours and four sizes works the same way in both, it is just modelled differently underneath.
  • Large catalogues are fine. Shopify handles big product counts and high order volumes without complaint. Bulk import, careful field mapping and a tidy-up pass get you there.
  • Customer accounts come across, though passwords do not. They cannot be read from one platform and dropped into another, so customers get a one-time reset email on first login. Plan the wording of that email, because it is the first thing your existing customers will see.
  • B2B requirements, things like company accounts, tiered pricing, quotes and payment terms, are handled by Shopify now, either natively on the right plan or through apps. This used to be the reason to stay on Magento. It mostly is not any more, but map your exact needs before you assume they fit.

What you have to protect

This is where a migration is won or lost. The catalogue is the easy part. The things that quietly carry your revenue are the ones to guard.

URLs, redirects and rankings

Your Magento URLs will not match Shopify’s structure. Let the old links die and you lose the search rankings you spent years earning, and every link anyone ever shared stops working.

The fix is a complete redirect map: every old URL pointed at its new equivalent with a 301. Products, categories, blog posts, landing pages, all of it. Do this properly and Google passes your rankings across. Skip it and you feel the drop within weeks.

Order history

Your past orders are not just records. They are your reporting, your customer service history and, often, the data your accountant relies on. Decide early what comes across and in what shape, so support can still pull up an order from eighteen months ago.

The ERP and everything wired to it

Most serious Magento stores are not one system. They are Magento plus an ERP, a warehouse system, an accounting tool like Xero, a PIM, maybe a marketplace feed. Every one of those integrations has to be rebuilt or rewired on the Shopify side, and this is usually the part that decides the timeline. Map every integration before you commit to a date.

Realistic timelines

A simple catalogue with clean data and few integrations can move in around four to six weeks. A larger store with B2B rules, custom logic and several back-office systems is more often three to six months, longer if the ERP work is heavy.

The real bottleneck is rarely Shopify. It is data cleanliness and the number of integrations behind the shop. The more third-party systems touch your store, the longer the migration, every time.

Build in a proper testing window before launch, and plan the switch for a quiet trading period rather than the run-up to your busiest week.

So, is it worth it?

For most Magento retailers who are tired of paying to keep the lights on, yes. You give up some deep control and gain lower running costs, less developer dependency and a platform your own team can actually use. The catch is that it is only worth doing if the redirects, the order history and the integrations are treated as seriously as the products.
