Checkout is where stores leak money
By the time someone reaches your checkout they have done the hard part: found you, chosen a product, decided they want it. Every field they have to fill in twice, every surprise delivery charge, every payment method that is missing is a reason to close the tab. Shopify's checkout converts well out of the box, and it is also easy to make worse with a handful of bad settings.
We treat the checkout as a product in its own right: where people drop out, what they are asked for, what they get after they pay. Then we fix it, in the order that makes the biggest difference to the number of orders you take.
Shopify Payments and Shop Pay, set up properly
For most UK retailers, Shopify Payments is the right processor: no extra transaction fee on top of your plan, payouts straight into your UK bank account, and it turns on Shop Pay, the accelerated checkout that remembers a customer's details across every store that uses it. We handle the setup end to end: business verification, payout schedule, the payment methods UK customers expect (cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, and buy now pay later through Klarna or Clearpay where it suits your margins), statement descriptors, and test orders before a real customer tries it.
Selling into Europe or in more than one currency? We set up Shopify Markets so prices, duties and payment methods are right for each country.
Checkout customisation, the way Shopify now wants it
For years, customising the checkout meant editing checkout.liquid: Plus only, and fragile with every Shopify update. That file has now been retired. The replacement is checkout extensibility: checkout UI extensions, Shopify Functions and the checkout editor, which let us add what you need without touching code that Shopify owns, so it keeps working through every update.
- Upsells at the point of payment: gift wrap, an extended warranty, the matching accessory
- Custom fields such as delivery instructions, gift messages or a trade account reference
- Trust content where it is needed: delivery promises, returns policy, secure payment messaging
- Thank-you and order status pages that do useful work: tracking, account creation, a sensible cross-sell
Some of the deeper customisations need Shopify Plus; we will tell you which before you commit. If you lost customisations when checkout.liquid went, we know which old hacks have a clean replacement and which are better dropped.
Subscriptions
Repeat orders are the cheapest revenue you will ever earn. Coffee, pet food, supplements, consumables for the equipment you sell: we set up subscriptions on Shopify's native subscription contracts with an app that suits your scale, configure the selling plans and subscriber discounts, make sure the customer portal lets people skip and swap without emailing you, and connect failed-payment recovery so a declined card does not quietly end the relationship.
B2B and wholesale
If you sell to trade as well as to the public, you do not need a second store. Shopify's built-in B2B tools, available on Shopify Plus, let us set up company accounts with multiple buyers, price lists per customer group, volume pricing, payment terms, and a checkout that asks for a purchase order number instead of a card. Your trade customers log in and see their prices. Everyone else sees retail. Orders land in the same admin, stock comes from the same pool, and your accounts package gets one feed instead of two.
Where Plus is not justified yet, we will say so and set up something lighter.
Discounts, shipping and delivery rules
Discount and shipping logic is where a lot of margin disappears. Codes that were never meant to stack, free delivery on an order that costs more to ship than it makes, a pallet product that gets the parcel rate. We map out your rules, build them with Shopify Functions where the standard settings run out, and test the edge cases: the mixed basket, the Highlands postcode, the trade customer using a retail code.
- Automatic discounts, tiered offers and bundles that behave exactly as intended
- Delivery rates by weight, size, zone and product type, including pallet and large-item delivery
- Local pickup, click and collect, and delivery date selection
- Courier integration so rates and labels come from live data rather than a table somebody updated last year
Fraud and chargeback hygiene
A chargeback costs you the goods, the fee and the time. We configure Shopify's fraud analysis and, where you need it, a dedicated fraud tool, so high-risk orders are held for review rather than shipped on autopilot. We also set up the unglamorous things that win disputes: a clear descriptor on the customer's bank statement, delivery confirmation captured against the order, and a returns policy that says what it needs to say.
Reducing abandonment
Finally, we measure: checkout conversion, drop-off by step, payment failures, and abandoned checkout recovery through email and SMS. Most of what we find is mundane: a delivery charge that appears too late, a phone number required for no reason, a discount field that sends people off hunting for a code. Mundane fixes add up. We make them, watch the numbers, and keep going.
Who this is for
Any UK retailer on Shopify whose checkout was set up once and never looked at again. Especially if you sell bulky or high-value products with complicated delivery, want to add trade or subscription sales to a retail store, or are on Shopify Plus and need the customisations you lost with checkout.liquid rebuilt properly.
Questions we get asked
Should we use Shopify Payments or stick with our existing provider?
For most UK retailers Shopify Payments wins on cost, because Shopify charges an extra transaction fee on top when you use a third-party gateway, and it is what turns on Shop Pay. There are exceptions: product categories Shopify Payments will not support, or a negotiated rate elsewhere that genuinely beats it. We will look at your numbers and tell you straight.
We are on Shopify Plus and still have checkout.liquid customisations. What happens to them?
checkout.liquid has been retired, so anything it was doing needs rebuilding with checkout extensibility. We audit what the old customisations did, keep the ones that earn their place, rebuild them as checkout extensions and Shopify Functions, and drop the ones that were only there because someone could.
Can we sell subscriptions and one-off purchases side by side?
Yes. Selling plans sit alongside the normal price on the product page, so a customer chooses subscribe-and-save or a one-off order. We set up the plans, the discounts and the customer portal so people can pause, skip and swap their own subscriptions without contacting you.
Do we need Shopify Plus for B2B and wholesale?
For Shopify's built-in company accounts, price lists and payment terms, yes. If your trade volume does not justify Plus, we set up a lighter arrangement using customer tags and a wholesale app that still gives trade customers their own prices and a sensible checkout. We will tell you which is right before you commit to either.
How do you know the checkout changes are working?
We measure before and after: checkout conversion rate, drop-off by step, payment failure rate and recovered checkouts. Every change goes in with a number attached so you can see what it did, and we will tell you if it made no difference.
